NORTHERN GREEN MOUNTAINS

The northern region of the 399,151-acre Green Mountain National Forest and its surrounding parks contain some of the most prized wildlands in the Northeast. Here, the Long Trail traverses the bald granite “backbone” of Vermont, where views of rolling hills unfold and plunge into swaths of rich farmland. Additional paths lead to sparkling ponds and cascading falls, many secluded within pristine wilderness areas. Hikes range from challenging all-day climbs to easygoing jaunts that can be completed in a few hours. Many of these routes are an easy drive from the Middlebury area, which is a great jumping-off point for adventures of all types.
